British Prime Minister Boris Johnson is facing opposition from lawmakers within his own Conservative Party. Why? On Tuesday, he proposed legislation to require vaccine passports, re-implementation of face masks and mandating COVID vaccines for workers.
The laws all passed, but only with support from the opposition Labour Party joining in. In what was the largest rebellion since becoming prime minister in 2019, 60 to 100 Conservative MP’s voted against the various party proposals.
“I respect the feelings and I respect the anxieties that colleagues have, of course I do,” Johnson stated. “I respect and understand the anxieties, the legitimate anxieties, that colleagues have about restrictions on their liberty and the liberty of people. But I believe that the approach that we’re taking is balanced and proportionate and right for this country.”
