Tom Brady is embarking on a new business venture.
The future NFL Hall of Famer has already established himself in the business world with his line of workout clothes, food, supplements, and other endeavors. Now he will be launching an NFT platform called Autograph. The initiative will see some of the biggest names in sports, entertainment, fashion, and pop-culture collaborate with creators to develop unique digital collectibles, a representative for Brady told CNN Business.
“Autograph will bring together some of the world’s most iconic names and brands with best in class digital artists to ideate, create and launch NFTs and ground-breaking experiences to a community of fans and collectors,” Dillon Rosenblatt, co-founder and CEO of Autograph, said in a statement.
NFTs, or non-fungible tokens, are “pieces of digital content linked to the blockchain, the digital ledger system underpinning cryptocurrencies such as Bitcoin and Ethereum,” CNN explained. “While those cryptocurrencies are fungible, meaning you can trade one Bitcoin for another identical one, each NFT is unique. The blockchain allows buyers and sellers to verify authenticity and ownership.”
Autograph has already launched a website that lists Brady as founder and chairman. Also listed on the board of advisers is Lionsgate CEO Jon Feltheimer, Live Nation Entertainment CEO Michael Rapino, DraftKings founder Paul Liberman, Dodgers, Warriors co-owner Peter Guber, and DraftKings North America President Matt Kalish, among others.
This could be a lucrative venture for Brady, whose rookie card recently sold for $2.25 million, which is the highest price paid for the NFL card. The sale was made on Friday through online sports auction house Lelands, according to New York Post.
“Tom Brady continues to shatter records both on and off the football field,” Lelands President Mike Heffner said in a statement.
The sale comes a month after another rookie card fetched $1.32 million at an online auction. James Park purchased the autographed 2000 Playoff Contenders Championship Ticket, which is one of only 100 such cards in the world. The sale was made in March on PWCC Marketplace, an online auction house.
“I lived in Boston for 10 years and so am a huge fan of Brady. The last Super Bowl win was just a mind-blowing accomplishment,” Park, who is a known collector, said in a PWCC Instagram post. “I’ve also had a love of collecting cards since I was a kid. Given Brady’s uncontested status as GOAT in football, this card is an important piece of sports history and of any collection and I’m incredibly excited to now own 1 of only 100 of Brady’s best rookie card.”
