Deciding on the best Batman of all time is obviously a subjective decision. But for any fans who believe Ben Affleck is the correct answer, it’s time to be disappointed. The 49-year-old actor reiterated in a recent interview that his most recent appearance as Batman is going to be his last.
Affleck made the comments during an interview with Herald Sun. During the conversation, the celeb discussed how filming for “The Flash,” an upcoming DC superhero movie, put an end to his run after lots of ups and downs.
He said filming “Justice League” with Joss Wheadon was, “a very, very, very hard experience” that led to a relapse in drinking and a lot of stress that eventually ended his involvement in the solo “Batman” movie, which the actor was planning to write, direct, and star in. But Affleck went on to say filming scenes for “The Flash” went much better and “put a really nice finish on my experience with that character.”
“I have never said this – this is hot off the presses – but maybe my favorite scenes in terms of Batman and the interpretation of Batman that I have done, were in the Flash movie,” the actor said. “I hope they maintain the integrity of what we did because I thought it was great and really interesting – different, but not in a way that is incongruent with the character.”
Affleck’s turn as the Caped Crusader has been riddled with controversy, which probably has a lot to do with why the actor chose to walk away forever. When the A-lister was cast in “Batman v Superman” in 2013, comic fans made their true opinions known, and it wasn’t pretty.
“I was hurt,” Affleck told The Howard Stern Show at the time, according to comicbook.com. “I was less hurt than I would’ve been 10 years earlier. But I was hurt because I felt like ‘Wait a minute, come on. What do I got to do to’ you know what I mean? Like, I’m just you know, like, ‘Jesus Christ’…I thought it was an interesting idea but you know what? I also realized at that point…it’s gonna be, ‘Now this turns into a petition.’ Now they got this thing, everybody’s going to do a petition.”
He continued, “You’re really – a hundred thousand [signatures], you signed a f***ing petition like, you have anything better to do with your day than sign petitions? But, ironically, the reason I did this is I wanted to do a movie for my kids, particularly my son, that they would see and be proud of.”
The movie got terrible reviews but audiences weren’t as scandalized by Affleck’s performance personally. Eventually, even they came around to the idea of the “Good Will Hunting” alum portraying the classic comic book character. However, now Affleck is done with superhero movies and “IP,” as he put it, and will be focusing on smaller projects in the future.
“The Flash” is scheduled to debut in theaters on November 4, 2022.
