Bill Maher, host of HBO’s “Real Time with Bill Maher,” said late last week that the FBI’s raid on former President Donald Trump’s Mar-a-Lago home might have saved him from losing in a Republican presidential primary against Governor Ron DeSantis (R-FL).
Maher’s comments come after the raid on Trump’s Florida residence dominated news headlines all week as U.S. Attorney General Merrick Garland admitted that he authorized the warrant for investigators to search the property for classified material that was supposed to be stored at the National Archives.
FBI agents removed numerous boxes of documents, including at least 11 sets of classified information and documents marked “top secret.”
Calling Trump “the luckiest man in the world,” Maher said, “His fortune was finally falling.”
“The Big Lie was finally losing momentum,” Maher continued. “DeSantis was beating him in the polls — you know who hates this more than anybody? DeSantis.”
“‘I had this in the bag, and now I gotta run against President Martyr,’” Maher said as he impersonated DeSantis.
Maher argued that the raid was “saving Trump politically” because it has caused “all the Republicans” to rally around Trump.
Maher predicted earlier this month that the 2024 Republican presidential nominee would either be Trump or DeSantis.
Maher said that he was “leaning more toward Ron [DeSantis],” being the GOP nominee, adding, “he’s got more than a shot, I mean, I think he won the straw poll in New Hampshire.”
When a guest on his show asked in June if he thought that DeSantis would be a better president than Trump, Maher responded, “Yes, yes I do.”
“He’s not certifiably insane. That’s a great one to start off with,” Maher said. “You know what Ron DeSantis won’t be doing? He won’t be poop-tweeting every day. It won’t be, like, having feuds with Bette Midler on Twitter. He’s not an insane person.”
On Friday, the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of Florida unsealed the warrant and receipts of items taken from the residence after Trump’s legal team said that it did not oppose releasing the information.
Investigators removed more than 20 boxes of documents which included five sets of top secret documents, “three sets of secret documents, and three sets of confidential documents.”
