Cities across the planet lit their buildings and monuments blue and yellow — the colors of Ukraine’s flag — as the Eastern European nation endures an invasion from neighboring Russia.
As The Daily Wire reported, Russian forces entered Ukraine early on Thursday, immediately destroying several dozen military bases. The Ukrainian government claimed that Russia in turn suffered 3,000 troop casualties and lost 516 military vehicles.
As events unfolded, photos and videos of the invasion’s effects on Ukrainians made international news. Many residents are taking shelter as Russian forces attack Ukraine’s major cities, while foreigners remain stranded in the country.
On Thursday evening, cities expressed their support for the people of Ukraine by lighting their skyscrapers and monuments according to the colors of Ukraine’s flag.

Those impacted by the need to take shelter include the most vulnerable in Ukrainian society. Indeed, one viral video shows medical staff helping roughly one dozen newborn babies settle into what appears to be a storage closet inside a makeshift bomb shelter. Prior to being relocated, the newborns were patients at Dnipropetrovsk Oblast Children’s Clinical Hospital in Dnipro, which is located in Eastern Ukraine.
“This is the NICU. In a bomb shelter. Can you imagine?” Dr. Denis Surkov, chief of the neonatal unit wrote to the New York Times in a text message. “This is our reality.”
“We were nervous, very confused,” Dr. Surkov continued.
Several world leaders issued statements in support of Ukraine at the outset of the invasion.
“The prayers of the entire world are with the people of Ukraine tonight as they suffer an unprovoked and unjustified attack by Russian military forces,” said U.S. President Joe Biden. “President Putin has chosen a premeditated war that will bring a catastrophic loss of life and human suffering.”
“This is an unacceptable violation of Ukraine’s democratic sovereignty and territorial integrity. I am in constant contact with allies to find a peaceful solution to the crisis and avoid a war in the heart of Europe,” stated Italian Prime Minister Mario Draghi. “The path of dialogue remains essential, but we are already defining within the European Union measures and sanctions against Russia.”
“The Russian attack on Ukraine is a blatant violation of international law. There is no justification for it,” added German Chancellor Olaf Scholz. “Germany condemns this reckless act by President Putin in the strongest possible terms. Our solidarity is with Ukraine and its people.”
