It’s only February and 2022 is already shaping up to be a dangerous year for law enforcement.
On Tuesday, two campus police officers were shot and killed during an active shooter situation at Bridgewater College in Virginia.
“Campus Police Officer John Painter and Campus Safety Officer JJ Jefferson were shot and killed on campus while protecting us,” College President David Bushman wrote on the school’s Facebook page. “These officers were close friends, known to many of us as the ‘dynamic duo.’ John was JJ’s best man in his wedding this year. They were beloved by students, faculty, and staff. I hurt for their families and loved ones, as I know we all do.”
CNN reported that campus police were called about a suspicious person on campus. Jefferson and Painter arrived at the scene and interacted with the suspect briefly before he shot them both and fled. The suspect was found and taken into custody.
The killings come after The Daily Wire reported that six police officers were shot – but survived – in the span of 48 hours across the U.S.
Fox News reported that “Two police officers were shot Wednesday afternoon in St. Louis; a Milwaukee sheriff’s deputy was shot several times during a traffic stop Wednesday evening; and, three more police officers were shot in Houston on Thursday, in separate instances, authorities said.”
One of the St. Louis police officers who was shot remains in “very critical, very unstable” condition after being shot in the leg, while the other officer was shot in the abdomen during a traffic stop. The officer who was in critical condition is now reportedly showing “amazing” improvement.
The shooting occurred after police officers saw a vehicle matching the description of one that was involved in a homicide Tuesday night. They pulled it over and the individuals in the vehicle started shooting at the officers as they approached. Both officers were struck and the individuals in the vehicle fled, with all four being taken into custody later.
Three officers were also shot and hospitalized in Houston, Texas, Fox reported.
“Three police officers were hospitalized during a separate shooting incident in Houston, after a suspect shot one officer in the foot, another in the leg, and a third officer in the arm, all of whom were hospitalized in stable condition at Memorial Hermann Hospital, authorities said,” the outlet noted.
The suspect who allegedly shot the three officers fled the scene and barricaded himself in a house, but police surrounded the building, resulting in a gunfight. The suspect was shot in the neck and surrendered.
In Milwaukee, Wisconsin, a sheriff’s deputy was shot multiple times in his arms and torso after pursuing a passenger who fled on foot during a traffic stop.
All these shootings occurred after the ambush of two New York Police Department officers, who were killed in January. Officer Jason Rivera was laid to rest last Friday, while a funeral for his partner, Wilbert Mora, was held on Wednesday. The two were responding to a domestic disturbance call when they were ambushed.
At his funeral, Rivera’s widow called out Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg for being soft on crime.
“You have the whole nation on gridlock. And although you won’t be here anymore, I want you to live through me. The system continues to fail us. We are not safe anymore, not even the members of the service [NYPD]. I know you were tired of these laws, especially the ones from the new DA. I hope he is watching you speak through me,” she said.
