Comedian Amy Schumer is opening up about the IVF process and secondary infertility.
The 40-year-old “Trainwreck” star discussed her motherhood journey on a recent episode of Chelsea Handler’s iHeartRadio podcast, “Dear Chelsea.” Schumer talked about attempting to have a second child as a sibling for her two-and-a-half-year-old son, Gene, and the myriad of emotions that went with the process.
“I did IVF, we made embryos and I went through the IVF process, which is so hard. People do it so many times. I did it one time and I was like, I’m gonna die. This is awful,” Schumer told Handler.
“I got like 31 eggs and I was like, I’m Fertile Myrtle. I felt very hot,” the comedian continued. “And then the drop off after fertilization, we only got one normal embryo and we tried and it didn’t work … and now I don’t have a uterus.”
“So we’re gonna have just one child and we’re just enjoying our little family and I’m just focusing on that,” she continued, referencing Gene. “I’m excited about it but I was sad. And it’s not really something you get sympathy for because it’s like, you already have one b****, shut up. But you know, that’s a real struggle people go through.”
She added, “We tried, but yeah we’re just gonna have the one perfect little adorable angel.”
Schumer had previously shared bluntly with her 11 million Instagram followers about the process of doing IVF to have another baby. The actress shared an image of her bruised abdomen in 2020, captioning it, “I’m a week into IVF and feeling really run down and emotional. If anyone went through it and if you have any advice or wouldn’t mind sharing your experience with me please do. My number is in my bio. We are freezing my eggs and figuring out what to do to give Gene a sibling.”
Schumer and her husband Chris Fischer had their first baby in May 2019 after an extremely difficult pregnancy. The “I Feel Pretty” star was hospitalized with hyperemesis gravidarum, a form of acute morning sickness that can cause dehydration and other issues. Schumer experienced this for all three trimesters of her pregnancy, People reported.
In April 2019, the author expressed her discomfort by posting on social media what was going on.
In it, she said she was “still pregnant and puking because money rarely goes to medical studies for women such as hyperemesis or endometriosis and instead goes to things like d**** not getting hard enough or old guys who want harder d****.”
Prince William’s wife Kate Middleton, Duchess of Sussex, is another well-known famous figure who suffered hyperemesis gravidarum through all three of her pregnancies.
