New York City Mayor-elect Eric Adams (D) has vowed to bring back the city’s plainclothes police unit after NYC Black Lives Matter activists threatened “riots” and “bloodshed.”

Adams appeared on CNN on Thursday after a heated exchange with Black Lives Matter of Greater New York sibling co-founders Hawk and Chivona Newsome the day before. After the trio met behind closed doors at Brooklyn Borough Hall, Hawk Newsome threatened civil unrest and violence if the mayor-elect followed through on his campaign promise to restore the New York City Police Department’s anti-crime units.

A defiant Adams promised to keep his pledge despite the threats from the local BLM leaders.

“I made it clear on the campaign trail: I’m going to put in place not the Anti-Crime Unit, I’m going to put in place a plainclothes gun unit,” Adams said, according to The New York Post. “This is what I’m going to do. That was my promise and I’m going to keep it.”

Adams reiterated his stance at a press conference later in the day. “This city is not going to be a city of riots, it’s not going to be a city of burning,” Adams said.

“This is going to be a city where we are going to be safe. We are going to have effective policing that is not heavy-handed. We’re going to have the backs of our police officers, we’re going to hold them accountable to do their job,” Adams said. He then took a shot at the BLM activists: “It’s ironic that at no time did that small fringe group talk about the gun violence that is destroying our city.”

Hawk Newsome threatened “riots,” “fire,” and “bloodshed” on Wednesday if New York City returned “to the old ways of policing.”

“If he thinks that they’re going to go back to the old ways of policing, then we are going to take to the streets again. There will be riots, there will be fire and there will be bloodshed because we believe in defending our people,” Newsome said after his meeting with Adams.

“So there is no way that he is going to let some Gestapo come in here and harm our people,” he continued. “We pray for peace but … prepare for the worst.”

His sister added: “We will shut the city down. We will shut down City Hall, and we will give him hell and make it a nightmare.”

The threat came after the Newsome got into a heated exchange with Adams in their meeting, which was streamed by someone inside over social media. As The Daily Wire reported:

During the meeting, Adams “erupted” at Newsome after the BLM leader swore to hold Adams responsible for any future misconduct by the NYPD, according to the Daily News.

“You’re on the ground: Stop the violence in my community. I’m holding you accountable,” Adams said.

“Don’t hold me accountable,” he continued. “Being the mayor, being the borough president, being the state senator — I put my body on the line for my community, so I’m not here for folks to come and say, ‘Eric, we’re gonna hold you accountable.’”

“No, it’s us. We need to do this together,” Adams said.
