Many royal family fans assume that Prince Charles and Prince Harry are not in a good place right now. The drama came to a head during Harry’s bombshell interview with Oprah in March 2021. During that conversation, the Duke of Sussex admitted that his father hadn’t reached out or spoken to him since Harry and Meghan announced their decision to quit working as senior royals.
Harry revealed that his dad stopped paying his way at that time. “All I wanted was enough money to get security and keep my family safe… I had to afford security for us,” Harry said. “[I was cut off] in the first quarter of 2020.”
“There’s a lot to work through there,” Prince Harry explained about his relationship with his father. “I feel really let down because he’s been through something similar.” The Duke of Sussex also revealed that his dad had stopped taking his calls.
Later, Harry told Dax Shepard’s Armchair Expert podcast that Charles passed down “genetic pain and suffering” to him.
This was the most royal family members had revealed about the emotions and true feelings within, at least since Princess Diana’s infamous Panorama interview in 1995. The British royals are notoriously private, which is what made Harry’s comments so shocking.
But now Harry’s dad Prince Charles is claiming there are no hard feelings between him and his son. The British heir recently published an essay in Newsweek in which he discussed pride in both sons, specifically with their commitment to climate change issues.
“As a father, I am proud that my sons have recognized this threat. Most recently, my elder son, William, launched the prestigious Earthshot Prize to incentivize change and help repair our planet over the next ten years by identifying and investing in the technologies that can make a difference,” Prince Charles wrote. “And my younger son, Harry, has passionately highlighted the impact of climate change, especially in relation to Africa, and committed his charity to being net-zero.”
These statements came just one week after Queen Elizabeth failed to include Harry in her annual Christmas address. “I could not be more proud of them,” Her Majesty said of her late husband Philip, son Charles, and grandson William on their efforts to protect the environment. But Harry was notably absent from her list of people to praise.
Prince Charles has been an outspoken advocate of climate issues for most of his public career. Newsweek reported that he gave his first speech on plastic pollution in 1970 before it was popular and even got mocked for being too extreme. The rest of his essay discussed his current thoughts on these concerns.
“At present, there is none more pressing than putting Nature, people and our singular and fragile planet at the heart of how we live, work and do business to create the brightest possible future for humanity,” Charles wrote. “The time is now. The eyes of our children and grandchildren are judging us. Let ours be the generation that can. And does. As we enter a new year, there is not a moment to lose.”
