Prince William is no stranger to speaking in front of a crowd, but those interactions usually involve prepared speeches, not impromptu sing-a-longs. That’s why the British royal admits to “cringing” at the memory of one very unexpected moment with pop superstar Taylor Swift.
The Duke of Cambridge recalled the situation during an episode of “Time to Walk,” an Apple Fitness+ series, according to Huffington Post.
Prince William said that the incident occurred during a 2013 Jon Bon Jovi performance at Kensington Palace. The prince was sitting next to Swift, feeling relaxed and enjoying the music, when she suddenly made him an offer he couldn’t refuse.
“Little did I think what was going to happen next. I’m sat next to Taylor Swift. She’s on my left. And after Jon does his first song, there’s a pause, and she turns to me,” he said. “She puts her hand on my arm, looks me in the eye and says, ‘Come on, William. Let’s go and sing.’”
The duke can’t believe Swift convinced him to join her on stage. “To this day, I still do not know what came over me,” he continued. Next, he recounted his embarrassment at the whole situation, even in retrospect.
“Honestly, even now I’m cringing at what happened next, and I don’t understand why I gave in,” Prince William said. But he also defended his moves, saying, “If Taylor Swift looks you in the eye, touches your arm and says, ‘Come with me,’ you basically do what she says.”
He recalls losing all sense of decorum and following her even while knowing he could make a fool of himself.
“I got up like a puppy and went, ‘Yeah, OK, that seems like a great idea ― I’ll follow you,’” the royal recalled.
He continued: “I walked up on stage in a trance, and then sort of halfway through Jon Bon Jovi’s ‘Livin’ on a Prayer’ song, I wake up. I’m thinking to myself, ‘Am I standing on the stage singing ‘Livin’ on a Prayer’ when I don’t even know the words?’”
He must have faked it well enough, because the audience adored his performance.
William recalled, “I thought, ‘Well, if they’re enjoying it, then the night is for them. So sod it. I can’t be the doofus who’s going to ruin it for everyone.” He claims he was attempting to stay “composed on the outside” but internally, “there was a lot of sweating.”
Finally, the prince clarified his stage fright. “A lot of people might think that I’m comfortable on stage. When I do speeches and things like that, I’ve done so many now, they’re not a problem,” he explained. “But I’ve not done singing.”
Prince William is second in line to the British throne after his father, Prince Charles. He hasn’t announced plans for any future musical performances.
