Warning: Spoilers ahead for “Spider-Man: No Way Home.”

By now, most movie-goers are aware that two original Spider-Man actors, Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield, make a cameo in the latest movie. That was one of the most exciting moments of the film for fans, which is why they were so annoyed with Kim Kardashian for spoiling it.

Now the movie’s screenwriters are sharing exactly why their appearances were so important and how they helped shape the movie. Chris McKenna and Erik Sommers spoke with The Hollywood Reporter about the impact these special appearances had on the film.

“[Maguire and Garfield] had thoughts, and it was really interesting and helpful to see their thoughts,” Sommers told the publication. “No one knows the character as well as — or gives as much thought to the character — as someone who has to then embody it and sell it. … It definitely shaped what we did.”

THR explained how Maguire wanted to keep revelations about his character minimal while Garfield “embraced exploring the dark path” with his version of Peter Parker following the death of Gwen Stacy (Emma Stone) in “Amazing Spider-Man 2.”

“They had great ideas that really elevated everything we were going for and added layers and an arc and we really actually started honing into the idea that these two guys were really helping Tom’s Peter on his journey to becoming who he ends up becoming,” McKenna told THR.  “There’s a crucial, moral moment that they help him get through in the climax of the movie. So much of that was brought by Tobey and Andrew’s ideas and shaping of what they thought their characters could bring to this story.”

In a way, they literally shaped the movie too by ad-libbing some scenes. “We reworked the rooftop school scene and all that stuff and there was so much fun improv of those guys,” McKenna told THR.

The writer also described how the two actors weren’t there for “fan-service” but rather added depth to the movie.

“They weren’t just here to go, ‘Two awesome Jedi knight heroes who show up and are going to help you take down the bad guys.’ They are going through their own things,” the writer explained.

“We were trying to write up to the characters that they did such a great job of creating and really being true to those characters and those stories and those worlds so that it didn’t feel like we were doing curtain call, fan-service.”

Meanwhile, the movie has been praised precisely because it does pay service to fans, or at least keeps their interest in mind. It’s also free from the ideological messaging that so many modern films have lately.

“No Way Home” shocked industry professionals by becoming the first $1 billion grossing film post-pandemic, even without a concurrent streaming component. It blew away the competition opening weekend, raking in $260 million like it was nothing.

Fans and critics both gave the film high praise and especially enjoyed the surprise cameos from Maguire and Garfield.
