Rumors of Queen Elizabeth’s death circulate every couple of months like clockwork. The 95-year-old monarch is the longest-reigning, longest-surviving in British history, making her eventual death a source of endless fascination for royal followers. These curious onlookers may be interested to learn of a few surprising events that will happen when Her Majesty passes away.

The latest rumor to crop up comes courtesy of celebrity gossip blog Hollywood Unlocked, which is written by Jason Lee and boasts close to 2 million followers, Yahoo reported. Lee stands by his claim that Queen Elizabeth is secretly deceased just days after Buckingham Palace confirmed the monarch had tested positive for COVID-19 and canceled virtual meetings while she recovered and rested.

Then the Queen attended her weekly meeting with U.K. prime minister Boris Johnson on Wednesday, February 23, via a video call, royal reporter Omid Scobie confirmed on Twitter. Buckingham Palace also verified that Her Majesty was present for the meeting and still very much alive, though they didn’t justify rumors of her death with a response.

Even though this time was a false alarm, the fact remains that Queen Elizabeth will die one day. That event will kick off a series of events that Buckingham Palace has been meticulously planning for.

The first pertinent detail to consider is where the Queen passes. This has become less of a concern ever since the global pandemic changed the world and Her Majesty stopped traveling even as far as her Sandringham estate. However, there were plans in place for what would happen if Queen Elizabeth wasn’t home when she died.

Royal fans no doubt recall how the Queen’s father, Prince George VI, passed at Sandringham in February 1952. Elizabeth was on a royal tour of Kenya when her father died.

One unusual thing that will happen when Queen Elizabeth dies is 12 days of mourning throughout the United Kingdom. This grieving period is so serious that the public will be discouraged from laughing for the duration, at least while watching television.

During this time, the BBC will refrain from airing any comedies or humorous television content in an effort to discourage people from laughing, according to The Daily Mail. News anchors will need to change into dark, mournful apparel before making the announcement about the Queen’s death on TV.

There’s a code phrase to indicate the Queen has died, which The Guardian reported is, “London Bridge is down.” The publication also indicated that the Queen’s senior doctor, a gastroenterologist named Professor Huw Thomas, will be present by her side and giving orders assuming she dies from an illness that’s known in advance.

Buckingham Palace will issue formal statements on the matter that will likely precede any entertainment blog posts. These could even start being issued in advance of her actual death if the doctor realizes the end is near.

The final official statement before King George V’s death said, “The King’s life is moving peacefully towards its close.” This update was posted on the night of January 20, 1936, just before his doctor administered a strong dose of morphine to help the process along.

News of Elizabeth’s passing will originate with Sir Christopher Geidt, the Queen’s private secretary. He’ll contact the prime minister via a secure line and will wake him if need be. Next, the news will be shared with the 15 governments outside the United Kingdom where the Queen serves as head of state.

Only after these officials have been notified will the press be given the information, which will explode across social media just like any celebrity death tends to do.

The nation will not be able to escape the Queen’s passing. Outside Buckingham Palace, a black-edged notice will appear on the gates announcing that Queen Elizabeth had passed. The Palace website will also be transformed into a black single page with the same formal words displayed.

Next, Parliament will convene after the death of a monarch so they may swear allegiance to their successor, who in this case is the United Kingdom’s longest reigning heir apparent, Prince Charles. The Prince of Wales has been second in line to the throne for 70 years, ever since his mother became Queen when young Charles was 3 years old.

Prince Charles will automatically become king when Queen Elizabeth dies though the official coronation won’t happen right away, and certainly not during the mourning period. First, Charles will swear his loyalty to Parliament and the Church of England. He’ll choose a name that may or may not be different from Charles.

The death of Queen Elizabeth will signal the end of an era. The monarch has lived through decades of sweeping change, watching the world transform and so many loved ones leave before her. There are plenty who criticize the Queen and even more who admire her. But it’s hard to argue that she hasn’t fulfilled the vow she made on the occasion of her 21st birthday with a speech given in South Africa. No one knew in four short years, Elizabeth would be forced to honor those promises.

“I declare before you all that my whole life, whether it be long or short, shall be devoted to your service and the service of our great imperial family to which we all belong,” she said. And so she has.
