Whoopi Goldberg called on the royal family to “apologize” for slavery amid Prince William and Kate Middleton’s trip to the Caribbean this week where they were met by protests calling for reparations for the crown’s “colonial past.”
During a panel discussion on “The View,” the co-hosts talked about the duke and duchess of Cambridge’s trip to Jamaica in which Sunny Hostin noted was being called “the charm offensive” following the British empire’s connection to enslavement, reported the Daily Mail on Friday.
Hostin said Britain wasn’t the only country that needed to apologize as she called out the United States.
“We built this joint for free, that’s what I mean,” Hostin shared.
“The Brits rarely, especially the royals, rarely talk about their history of enslavement,” she added. “They rarely talk about how they got their wealth off the backs of black people.”

“We can not ignore the fact that Britain ran ramshod [sic] over India for years,” Goldberg responded. “Let us not forget, when we talk about what needs to happen, all the folks that need to apologize.”
“Listen, this is not new,” she added. “And I suspect Charles, when he was in Barbados, had some idea because he went on and apologized as he was releasing the hold that Britain has.”
“So perhaps somebody’s is listening, and it’s the new group of folks,” Goldberg continued. “I don’t know if it’s Charles, but one of them.”
During a dinner at the official residence of the governor-general of Jamaica on Wednesday, Prince William repeated the words his father [Prince of Wales] said in Barbados last year when he talked about the slave trade as an “appalling atrocity” that “stains our history,” but didn’t specifically name the royal family’s part in it, reported the Daily Mail.
“I strongly agree with my father, the Prince of Wales, who said in Barbados last year that the appalling atrocity of slavery forever stains our history,” the duke shared.
“I want to express my profound sorrow,” he added. “Slavery was abhorrent. And it should never have happened. While the pain runs deep, Jamaica continues to forge its future with determination, courage and fortitude.”
“The strength and shared sense of purpose of the Jamaican people, represented in your flag and motto, celebrate an invincible spirit,” William continued.
During the royals trip, Jamaican Prime Minister Andrew Holness made a declaration to be independent from Queen Elizabeth II’s rule, reported People magazine.
