Reports are now swirling that 2024 could bring a presidential election featuring none other than Hillary Clinton.
Clinton has managed to stay in the news, somehow getting invited on TV shows to talk about a guy who is no longer president. With President Joe Biden at 79 years old and speculation rife that he won’t run for re-election, talk has turned to a potential Clinton rerun — and even a rematch between her and Donald Trump.
“2016 Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton is an interesting prospect to consider when looking for a viable candidate, particularly if an 80-something President Biden decides not to seek a second term,” The Hill columnist Joe Concha wrote in a piece headlined, “Hillary 2024? Given the competition, she may be the Dems’ best hope.”
“And why would he? Just 22 percent of voters want him to seek a second term, according to a I&I-TIPP poll. It doesn’t get much better when polling only Democrats, where just 36 percent want to see the president run again, with that juggernaut candidate named ‘someone else’ coming in first with 44 percent support.”
Concha goes on to argue that the Democratic bench is extremely thin, dismissing Vice President Kamala Harris, former New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo, and California Gov. Gavin Newsom, and as viable contenders over terrible poll numbers, a humiliating resignation, and a recent recall effort in a deep blue state, respectively. That leaves Hillary atop the heap, Concha says.
Just this past Sunday, Clinton warned that Trump is planning to run again, claiming there would be catastrophic consequences for America if he wins.
“I think that could be the end of our democracy,” she said. “Not to be too pointed about it, but I want people to understand that this is a make-or-break point.”
Clinton’s continued presence on the stage — liberal networks continue to put her on the air nearly every weekend — signals to some that she’s setting up a run. And with Biden plunging in the polls — along with Vice President Harris, who stood at just 28% approval rating in one recent poll — Clinton’s name recognition would once again put her at the head of the pack.
In her Sunday interview, Clinton said she tried to caution Americans about Trump in 2016, when she got crushed in the Electoral College in her 306-232 loss.
“I tried to warn people. I tried to make the case that this was really dangerous — the people he was allied with, what they were saying, what he might do,” she said. “Clearly, there were people who liked what they saw, despite what I see as the real dangers to our country. They turned out and voted for him.”
For the record, Biden first ran for president in 1988. More than 30 years later, he finally won the White House. So there’s still time for Hillary.
