Texas Republican Rep. Dan Crenshaw took CNN to task over its attempt to blame the GOP for its lack of support for sweeping gun control laws following the Uvalde school shooting, pointing out that the proposals would not have the outcome Americans desire.
Crenshaw, a military veteran and representative in the state where the mass shooting occurred, made the remarks during an interview with CNN’s Dana Bash on “State of the Union” on Sunday.
“A lot of these policies that I think the Democrats often propose that are gun control policies, they do two things. One, they infringe on the rights of millions and millions of gun owners. And two, they probably wouldn’t have the outcome that you’re hoping for,” Crenshaw argued.
“So if you’re not going to get the benefit that you want but it’s going to come at great cost that generally means it’s not a very great policy,” he added.
Earlier in the interview, Crenshaw proposed that the best way to respond is to focus on options for school security that can have the most immediate change.
“What needs to change is the things that would have the most immediate and succinct effect,” he proposed.
His commentary focused on hardening security in schools, such as police officers on campus and protected entry points.

Crenshaw noted a potential solution that could be agreed on would be the background check system for firearms.
“So maybe a solution we could agree on would be our background check system. Again, he went through a background check. So the problem isn’t that a red flag law could have solved this. It doesn’t seem clear that would have happened. The problem is that the background check didn’t capture the full story of this person,” he claimed.

The Texas representative noted that Republicans have proposed background check laws to improve the system, but Democrats appear to be more focused on gun control.
The gunman in the Uvalde, Texas, shooting at Robb Elementary School reportedly purchased two rifles shortly after his 18th birthday and passed a background check.
The mass shooting ended the lives of 19 children and two teachers on Tuesday. The shooter was killed by a nearby Border Patrol officer who responded to the call for help.
CNN’s “State of the Union” also interviewed Texas state Democratic Sen. Roland Guiterrez who argued that the reported concerns of delays in law enforcement response time to the Uvalde shooting are “of significant concern.”
"The issue with operational control is of significant concern to me."

The report comes as information has been revealed regarding significant delays in the time between when the shooter entered the building and when he was taken out more than an hour later.
Texas Republican Gov. Greg Abbott has claimed he was misled regarding the original evidence and is “livid about what happened.”
“My expectation is that the law enforcement leaders leading the investigations … they get to the bottom of every fact with absolute certainty,” he added.
