Rep. Dan Meuser, R-Pa., denounced House Democrats’ attempt to pass its version of election law changes Wednesday, saying it federalizes voting rules in violation of the U.S. Constitution and calling it a “power grab.”

“I try not to ever look at what a motive can be in a bill,” Meuser, 57, told Newsmax TV’s “American Agenda.” “It’s a power grab, and we’re going to work to oppose it. We really don’t think it’s going to pass in the Senate, so why they’re running this as H.R.-1 is another mystery in itself.”

The bill has several provisions that most Democrats routinely promote, such as “motor voter” that automatically registers a person when they either obtain a driver’s license or renew one, the banning of identification requirements to vote, which Meuser says 33 states have, and expansion of mail-in balloting.

“That’s bad enough,” Meuser said.

“The provisions of this bill,” he continued, “to start with, we are now going to be using taxpayer dollars to fund campaigns. You know, I hear a lot from people out on the trail and in my district, nobody ever says to me, ‘Hey, we need more money in politics.’

“And it’s a 6-to-1 match, if you can believe it. If a donation is made to a candidate for $200, the American taxpayer is in for another $1,200. And that’s just for starters.”
