Comedian Amy Schumer recalled the backlash she faced after she asked a crowd at her show in 2016 why they were going to vote for Donald Trump, and admitted doing so “did hurt my bank account.”

During the 41-year-old actress’ appearance on the UNINTERRUPTED’s “The Shop” series on YouTube, the comedian talked with CNN’s Don Lemon, Lebron James, and more about being a female comic. Schumer said it’s always been a trial and error thing for her on stage, noting how she found that in Florida in 2016, just asking her audience who they were going to vote for was enough to lose some of the crowd.

“Do you test yourself, because like [Chris] Rock says always test yourself,” Lemon shared. “He was worried about because, people with phones, you get canceled.”

Schumer admitted she does test stuff, but that she’s definitely “afraid of backlash.”

“Yes, yes I am,” the “Trainwreck” star said. “But, you know, whatever. It comes and goes. And you know what, I don’t hurt, like…”

She was then asked whether she should be afraid of backlash, and that’s when she admitted, “Well, okay, me openly saying, not even being mean about Trump, but just during 2016, I’m onstage and I just wanted to ask someone in the crowd, just ‘Can someone explain to me why you, like, why you would vote for him?’”

“You know, just asking the question,” Schumer explained. “200 people get up and leave. This is at an arena in Tampa, and 15,000 people stayed. Sorry, but anyway. Going forward from there, like, that did hurt my bank account.”

“Like alienating that,” Schumer continued while gesturing with her hand. “But it feels good to be free.”

In October 2016, the “Snatched” star made headlines after she was booed at a show in Tampa and hundreds walked out after the comedian mocked Trump as, among other things, an “orange, sexual-assaulting, fake-college-starting monster,” before asking members in the crowd how they could support him, the Tampa Bay Times noted at the time.

Schumer at the time was a very vocal supporter of Hillary Clinton, who had gotten the Democratic presidential nomination and was running against Trump.
