A new poll shows just over half of Americans in border states think that President Joe Biden’s immigration policies have increased COVID-19 cases, drug trafficking, and deaths of immigrants trying to reach the border, the Washington Examiner reports.

According to a survey from the National Sheriffs’ Association, half of Americans said yes when asked if the border situation was causing COVID-19 case numbers to rise, is leading to increased incidents of immigrants drowning or dying of dehydration, and is leading to an increase in the amount of drugs and humans trafficked across the border.

  • 50% said border situation is increasing COVID-19 cases in U.S.
    • 53% of those in border states said the same.
    • 49% in non-border states said the same.
    • 46% of Democrats said the same.
    • 64% of Republicans said the same.
    • 44% of independents said the same.

  • 58% said the border situation is increasing the number of migrant deaths due to dehydration or drowning.
  • 29% aren’t sure.
  • 13% said the situation is not increasing deaths.
  • 55% said border situation increasing the abuse of migrant women.
    • 65% of those in border states said the same.
    • 52% of those in non-border states said the same.
    • 53% of Democrats said the same.
    • 61% of Republicans said the same.
    • 53% of independents said the same.

“Americans believe that the crisis of migrants arriving through the southern border and into the United States is increasing the exploitation of transported women subjected to servitude, prostitution, and other forms of exploitation,” said Cochise County, Arizona, Sheriff Mark Dannels, who chairs the National Sheriffs’ Association Border Security Committee.

“The crisis is increasing preventable deaths of many immigrants during transport due to causes such as drowning and dehydration, an increase in COVID cases in the United States, and a spike in drug trafficking because of the influx,” he added.

A Pew Research Center poll released earlier this week also showed that most Americans have a dim view of the Biden’s administration’s handling of the border, with 68% of Americans saying that the government is doing either a very or somewhat bad job.

“Unfortunately, current border security policies have empowered the criminal cartels, human smugglers and traffickers in heroin, methamphetamines, and fentanyl, while leaders in Washington, D.C., have remained ineffective at combating this enormous crisis hurting our border communities and briskly moving to the United States’s interior,” said Dannels.

The poll was conducted on behalf of the National Sheriffs’ Association by TechnoMetrica online with 1,300 Americans from April 28 to April 30, with a margin of error of +/- 2.8 percentage points.
