Rockefeller Center’s Christmas tree has made its debut in New York City for the 2021 season. The 12-ton, 79-foot-high Norway spruce was trucked into the city from Maryland on Saturday.
The tree lighting ceremony is set for Dec. 1, where it’ll be wrapped in more than 50,000 colorful lights and topped with a 900-pound star.
Donated from the Price family, they said the 85-year-old tree was cut down because they were concerned about it tipping over during a storm. Despite its removal, the family said they’re very excited it made its way to the Big Apple.

“So the tree will be lit with over 50,000 lights and there really is nothing like the magic of setting foot on Rockefeller Center campus at Christmas time, with ice skaters in the rink underneath Prometheus and the tree illuminated and the Swarovski star on top of it. It really feels like the Christmas season comes to life nowhere better than here,” said the Tishman Speyer Managing Director overseeing Rockefeller, EB Kelly.
In the meantime, officials said the tree will stay up until January.
