University of Georgia linebacker Adam Anderson is facing felony charges for allegedly raping a 21-year-old woman. The NFL prospect made his first court appearance on Thursday after turning himself in to police on Wednesday.

The woman told authorities on the night of Oct. 29, she went to a residence near the university after having drinks and woke up to Anderson sexually assaulting her. She described the incident as non-consensual and reported it to police that afternoon.

Georgia football coach Kirby Smart released a statement on the matter.

“We are aware of the report and we don’t comment on law enforcement matters, but I’ve been clear about the high standards we have for our student-athletes on and off the field. I will be working closely with our administration to ensure we cooperate fully with all law enforcement and campus protocols,” Smart said.

Meanwhile, Anderson’s lawyer claims his client is innocent and will vigorously defend himself in court. The athlete is currently being held in a county jail without bond.
