The President of Guatemala has blamed the Biden administration for the recent surge of illegal immigration at the U.S. border. During an interview on Wednesday, President Alejandro Giammattei said the administration’s ”lukewarm” border stance caused the crisis.

Giammattei accused Joe Biden of inviting immigrants to the border through his promises of family reunification. He argued this left a lot up for interpretation and led to the mass flood of children and teenagers who were brought to the border.

Giammattei met with Kamala Harris earlier this week, reportedly urging her to impose harsher penalties on human smugglers. He praised her recent efforts on warning immigrants they would be turned back if they made attempts to enter the United States.

The meeting comes amid a surge of illegal immigration at the U.S.-Mexico border, which many say is a result of the undoing of a number of trump-era immigration policies.
